From a business perspective, IPTV service providers rely on both subscribers and advertisers to provide viable revenue streams. Also involved are the content owners who assign distribution rights to IPTV service providers in very specific regions. IPTV service providers must ensure that contents are enjoyed by subscribers under the terms of the licenses assigned by content owners. This is accomplished using digital rights management technologies. DRM is used to apply the intellectual property restrictions on digital assets. This chapter will present the history and evolution of intellectual property (IP) as well as the existing technologies that can be used within IPTV environments to ensure the protection of digital assets. DRM is heavily supported by encryption technologies. Readers may want to expand their understanding of encryption algorithms and techniques before undertaking a review of live DRM systems.
