Recent advancements in computers, microprocessors, and integrated circuits have led to MAC systems with a large capability. These computerized MAC systems have new features which have significantly changed the whole aspect of monitoring and control. With the ever-increasing complexity of earth stations, it is essential that a computerized monitoring system be implemented if efficient utilization and logging of the monitored parameters is to be effected. A computerized monitoring system, as compared to an analogue monitoring system, has the following advantages: monitoring of the parameters would be automatic and pre-programmed corrective action(s) to specific failures would be included in the software, subject to alteration by the station staff as required; minimizes the routine work of periodic meter readings; a video screen is generally used to display the status of the operational carriers or channels and of the equipment (at different levels of detail and including on-line and off-line stand-by circuits) are usually displayed under the form of diagrams with programmed menus in order to give clear, real-time, indications of all earth station parameters under surveillance; performs alarm filtering and diagnostic evaluation of the source of failure; in most cases, software changes rather than hardware changes are required to alter any parameter or to upgrade the capabilities; can be used to print out hard copies of parameter values for further processing, e.g. failure reports, availability reports, outage, etc.; it manages and updates the database of the earth station (equipment composition, traffic, events, etc.); can be expanded as the system grows and extensions to a network control centre can be easily accomplished (see Figure 7.65).

If the job you want to suspend is running in the background, you will find that Ctrl-Z does not work because it is strictly a foreground-related command. In this case, use the fg command to bring the command into the foreground and then suspend it with Ctrl-Z. You might have to use the job number as supplied by the jobs command. As shown in Example 12.13, you would issue fg %jobnumber, press Enter, and then press Ctrl-Z. Assume that you want to resume a suspended job and return the job processing to the background. Simply type bg (background) at the prompt. The shell returns a job number in square brackets followed by a plus sign (+). The plus sign indicates that the job is the most recently started or stopped. The returned display also includes the ampersand (&) at the end of the listed job name, indicating that the job is in the background.

To understand the problem and flow of events, look at Figure 3.8. This sequence diagram further illustrates the various sequences of actions performed by a client invoking the ACME Web services and in the WebLogic server. Based on the previous sequence of events, we choose to use a fa ade pattern by having a session bean act as a proxy by encapsulating the interactions between the business service components such as AcmeXMLHelper and AcmeDAO. AcmeXMLhelper will handle all the XML construction and AcmeDAO will do the database interaction.
